I was very interested in your post.I have a good deal of information on my McColl line, my maiden name is McColl and my relatives have done a wonderful job in keeping our lineage organized.
I have a wonderful book put together by some of my relatives: Genealogy of the Ancestors and Descendants of John Thomas McColl Hugh G. McColl and Other McColls Pioneer Settlers of Marion and Marlboro Counties South Carolina 1773 --- 1966
anyway.. there is a page in here titled "Interesting Letter" and it reads - in snippets :
````````````````````````` The following is an extract from a letter, dated 2nd November 1879. It was written by Hugh McColl, father of the late Hon. James Hiers MacColl. An account of whose life (with portrait appeared in our first issue.)
... But my grandfather told me the last time I saw him 40 years ago (1839) that our crest was a dun cow with the motto "Dochas Marthir."
.. All were dealers in cattle. Your mother Sarah is a Nighean, or daughter of, as I am Mac, or son of Seumes MacColl or James MacColl. He was the son of John, who was the son of Hugh, who was the son of Paul, who was the son of John, the fair or enon ban, who was the son of Solomon. I believe there was another named Ronald, but I must confess a doubt about him, the Gaelic being Roal or Roghal. My grandfather exacted a promise that I would teach these names mentioned to my children who would do the same, and to tell them if ever tempted to do wrong to another to remember their forefathers and never bring disgrace on the Clan Colla or the children of Coll. Every MacColl haols from Appin. There are few there now, but 300 of the name bore arms at the battle of Inverlochy. Before the close of the last century either three or four brothers and sisters of my grandfather chartered a vessel in Greenoch and sailed for Carolina South.I saw a letter from a cousin of my father giving the names of severnty of his relations of whom were men of more or less ranks, or marks. ```````````````````````````````````````````
It does go on - but I thought it was interesting and went right along with the information of your post.
