My great great great grandfather Duncan McColl emigrated from Kilmory, Ardnamurchan. We suspect that he emigrated with several of his sons- Donald, Malcolm, Samuel, and unidentified, as well as one daughter Sarah (Sally) in 1827. They appear to have settled at New Glasgow, Terrebonne County, Quebec. In 1837 sons Donald, Malcolm, and Samuel migrated to Westminster Twp, Middlesex Co, Ontario, Canada. Duncan McColl died in Westminster Twp in the Autumn of 1838 aged 94, which would give him a birth year of approximately 1744.He is buried in the McColl family Cemetery, on Lot 11, concession 7, Westminster Twp. An oral pedigree of Duncan McColl which was passed down in Gaelic gives his father as John McColl, his grandfather as John McColl and his great grandfather as Duncan Ban McColl. We have no information as to the dates of, spouses of, other children of or location of these individuals.
Family lore states that Duncan McColl was married twice- having a son John McColl from his first marriage. This John McColl emigrated directly from Scotland to Westminster Twp, Middlesex Co, Ontario in 1841 with seven grown children, one of whom was Duncan McColl, the Catechist, who gathered a number of Presbyterian congregations in Middlesex and Elgin County. So far as family lore indicates, the other children of Duncan McColl were children of the second marriage to UNKNOWN but we have no proof of this. Other children of Duncan McColl (died 1838) might be two unidentified sons who emigrated from Scotland to Prince Edward Island and were never heard of again by the family, and possibly a Hugh McColl and a Duncan McColl.
The unknown son who emigrated to New Glasgow, Quebec, had family there but is said to have died there three months after the birth of his youngest son, named John S McColl, as a result of a sheepshearing accident. His children were said to have been raised in Quebec (probably at New Glasgow) by persons unknown (perhaps French Canadian Catholics, perhaps relatives of their mother who died at John S McColl's birth.)These children later went to Westminster Twp where their father's people were living.
