McColl's in South America
I am Richard McColl (presently of Bogota, Colombia) born in London, England in the 1970s to my Canadian father Howard Stuart McColl (1927-2010) of Winnepeg. His father was Hugh McColl, buried in Victoria, BC, Canada and brother was the Reverend Rayburn McColl (1923-2011) of Vancouver, BC, Canada.
So, after that brief introduction, I just wanted to say that I had quite a lot of information about the family tree but unfortunately, with the passing of my father and uncle, much of this has gone to the grave with them.
I know that the Sweets and McColl family left Oban Scotland in the 19th Century and then came to Montreal where they helped build a Presbyterian church. Many of them stayed in that region before then heading west and in particular my grandfather in order to work on the railways in Winnepeg. They subsequently moved even further west to Victoria for health reasons.
So, after a long winded story, I was born in the UK to an English mother (Lesley Ann Neilson) and my aforementioned father. I have since upped sticks and moved to Colombia where I work as a journalist in Bogota and a hotelier in the town of Mompos. And I am happy to say that the McColl family line will continue out this way as I am to be wed in August to a Colombian.
Some years ago I visited Savannah, Georgia and took some time out to go to the cemetery there, and yes, there were dozens of McColls. There was also a McColl in both the cemetery on the Falkland Islands and in the cemetery in Montevideo, Uruguay.
So, if anyone has any information relevant to my family, or needs any researching out in South America, please be in touch.
Richard
