You seem very knowledgeable about the McColley family line. I have just discovered that my g-g-g-grandfather's brother was given the middle name McCullea, McRuley, McCully - or a variant. This information comes down through the family and spelling is suspect. The only reason for this middle name is that it represents a family name for the previously unidentified wife of David Wells, named Mary. She would have been born ca 1780, probably in Pennsylvania. And married ca 1797 probably somewhere in the northern neck of Virginia. The Wells family I am researching are of at least as early as 1670 in the general Delaware/PA border region. They began on the Great Migration about 1778 (last date for child born in PA), thence to Virginia (two children born 1779, 1783) then on to Kentucky and finally Indiana. One child of the family did not reach Kentucky until 1799, having married (1797) and had first child (1798, Virginia) along the way. I have only just discovered this information. Since I am uncertain as to the spelling, I thought I should just plunge in and reach out for some general clues concerning search parameters, possible spelling variants you have run across. By the way, my Wells family were almost certainly among the earliest Primitive Baptist converts in Pennsylvania and religion was apparently a primary motivating factor in their migration and choice of community. Any insight greatly appreciated.
