I posted an inquiry yesterday re: Agnes McCombs, which seems also to involve George McCombs of PA.Regarding what may be George, I have in the family a large trunk handed down by Agnes McCombs Smith, with the initials "G Mc" and a date of 1765 on it.According to Antiques Road Show, the trunk was only made during a 2 year period, in Lancaster, PA.
Agnes has always been of interest to me- she left her birth home in Canada (see below), and came here to Tivoli/Red Hook/ Dutchess County, NY, only to die shortly after. As no one in the family was aware of her parents, other than that her mother may have been Indian, I have never been able to trace her.Curious that she would have the trunk, clearly made for the family, in PA.
I believe that the McCombs first came to Albany, NY, then to PA, then to Canada, and she alone returned to NY again through her marriage.
Agnes McCombs b.1835 Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
m. 30 Sep 1856 as above
to James Smith, from Fyvie, Scotland
son William b. 1857 Hamilton, Ontario
son James b. 1859 as above
d. 9 Sep 1863 Tivoli, Dutchess, NY
Her gravestone is in the Cemetery in Saugerties, Ulster, NY, but I do not believe that the body was ever moved over from Tivoli.(Tivoli is directly across the Hudson River- James moved here to raise the boys and never remarried).
I have extensive papers regarding Jmaes and Agnes, sometimes referred to as Nancy.
I don't know if you've anything to add to the puzzle, but i wanted to let you know of the chest potentially belonging to a George McCombs, who must have been in Lancaster, PA in 1765.
