As a McConnell descendant, I have been researching the ancient roots and the historical family of the MacDonald/McConnell's for nearly 40 yrs. I currently have over 30 books on the subject. In reseaching my family tree (David McConnell and John Hineman) in Pennsylvania in the 1700's and Ohio in the 1800's I was drawn to the next family research tool-DNA. Via Family Tree DNA, I joined the Clan Donald Project and had one of my McConnell cousin submit a DNA sample. Thus far the DNA results have taken us to previously unknown areas. It seems my McConnell family has ties to the ancient ruling lines with the Laign people of Ireland in the Leinster area. This would seem to pre-date Somerled's time and the founding of Clan Donald. However, some of the descendants of Somerled and Clan Eoin Mhoir became Galloglas to the regional Lords in central and Northern Ireland. Thus the question is, "what came first, the chicken or the egg." I invite all McConnell and related families within Pennsylvania, Ohio, etc. to join the Clan Donald Project and ascertain where your ancient roots begin. Mine were quite surprising and unexpected, yours may be too. I have also found McConnell's who are closely connected via DNA and we are working on finding the 1700's paper trail connecting our families in Pennsylvania. This is an exciting new tool to use in family research to connect families. If I can be of service, contact me at:firstname.lastname@example.org. Kirsten Saxe is also another individual knowledible in the use of DNA in family research.
