Kathy,What is the source of your record of marriage for Columbus and Sarah?Columbus could have possibly been married to a "Sarah", but everything I have lists his wife as Mary Riffle.Mary did have a sister Sarah Riffle, but she is listed as a minor in all these records.Their mother Ellender was appointed as Administratrix of David's estate in 1864, and I have those records also, but no names of heirs were given on those records.
Evidently Ellender either left the state of died between 1864 and 1866, as there were other administrators appointed to settle the estate after 1866.I made copies of everything I could find in Vinton County courthouse when I was researching this family - there wasn't a whole lot there and what they did have was so old and brittle it was falling apart. The clerk was kind enough to make me copies of what we could find, but I'm not sure the records are still there because they were in a packet in one of the drawers, and like I said in very bad shape - faded and falling apart when I was there more than 15 years ago.
From copy of handwrittenprobate court records when the land was sold to settle the debts of David Riffle's Estate -"Probate Court Records dated 27 May 1867- Joseph Keeler (last name may be Kaler-very hard to read), Probate Judge - Petition to sell Lands - David Riffle, Admn'r de bonis nonVS Susannah McClain, et al"
"....The said Riffle died leaving the following named persons his heirs at law, and having the next estate of inheritance in said premises, to wit:Susanna Riffle intermarried with Wm. McClain, Henry Riffle, Mary Riffle intermarried with Columbus McComber, Elizabeth Riffle, Barbary Riffle, Francis Riffle a minor aged sixteen years, Sarah Riffle, a minor aged Fourteen years, Esther RIffle a minor aged eleven years, for whom John Calvin has been durly appointed guardian, Minerva Riffle a minor age eight years, all residents of the County of Vinton Ohio, and Susannah Riffle intermarried with William McClain who reside in Jackson County West Va. as your petitioner is informed, though he has no personal knowledge of their residence. Your petitioner further represents that one Leonard Arbough who resides in said County of Vinton, is tenent in common and owns four ninths of aforesaid Real Estate, in fee simple. That John Calvin who resides in said County of Vinton has purchased the entire interest of the following heirs of said Riffle deceased and owns the fee simple of their undivided interest in said realty, to wit: The interest of Henry Riffle, Mary Riffle intermarried with Columbus McComber, and Barbary Riffle, and that said Elizabeth Riffle, heir at law of said David Riffle deceased, conveyed by deed, recorded in Vol 10 page 73 of the Records of Deeds in and for said Vinton County, to one Joseph Arbough all her interest in the aforesaid five ninths of said real estate...... "
The Legal Notice published in the "Vinton Record, a weekly newspaper printed and in general circulation in said County, also lists the same above named heirs at law - and again the listing is for "Mary McComber", not Sarah.. "Columbus McComber" is also listed in this Legal Notice.
Any info you can share on this family would be greatly appreciated.
