Various Immigrations of McElhiney Name
This is a wonderful resource for communication about our common heritage,
those of us with the name of McElhiney. For
years I thought that there were no others
out there besides my own personal family
tree.And then I discovered GenForum!
Now I understand that there are many variations on our name: McElhaney, McElheney,
McElhinney, McLaney to name a few, but I
am mainly focusing on those of use who came
across the ocean with just one name:
McElhiney
I have in front of me a family tree that
covers about half of a twin-sized bed and it
focuses just on the offspring of:
Matthew McElhiney b. 1738 Donegal, IRL
He, of Scottish descent, immigrated to
Maryland in 1760.He moved to Ohio Valley,
West VA in 1744, married Margaret Cope in
1778, moved to Muskingham Co. OH in 1806,
Margaret died in 1812, and Matthew died in
1822 in Morgan Co., OH.
Children:
James b. 1779 d. 1882No children
Eleanore b. 1781 d. 1858No Children
Patrick b.1783 d. 1833No Children
Richard b. 1786 d. 1852

Catherine
Matthew II b. 1788d. 1837
Margaret M.
Cynthia
Samuel H.
Benjamin
Catherine E.
James R.
Catherine b. 1791
Now, the point that I would like to make is
this:
All of these McElhiney family members were
here before 1830.
This is not meant to point out earlier vs.
later immigration, simply to identify that
we have a more difficult task than otherwise
imagined to trace our roots since there were
several immigrations of McElhiney family
members from Donnegal before the 1900s.
My family tree currently only shows my
grandfather Ralph V. b. 1882d. 1992, though
I have much of the information for 3 more generations of his offspring.
And one other piece of interesting information for those of you descending from
Matthew--there is currently a 17-year-old
Matthew McElhiney who has been winning
racketball competitions since he was 5 who
is a member of the family.
Lance McElhiney, one of the US Army's top
helicopter pilots (over 30 years) is a
member of the family.
We have much to be proud of as members of
the McElhiney family, including the spelling
of our name.
Questions and comments are welcome.
