I have moved and went through several computer crashes since the information you recieved sereral years ago. I was out of the GEneology loop for several years and am just getting back into the swing again. The original information I got on the McElhose family was pasted down through my grandmother Sarah McElhose Knapp and my father, Leland Knapp. I also have a handwritten chart found in Nancy McElhose Alloway's Bible and given to my father. This is the Nancy McEhose that was born in 1841. Her mother, also Nancy, died a day or so later. John, her father, married Nancy's sister Sarah Ballentine, February 4, 1842. My great grandfather, Abraham, was also born in 1842. John and Nancy Ballentine had five children: Archibald, Lettica, George, Margaret and Nancy. John And Sarah Ballentine had 14 children: Abraham, Elizabeth, Susan, Mary Alisa, Drusilla, Jullette, Jameas, Helen, Loena, Rebecca, John, Martha, Annie and Persis. Archie, George and Abraham fought in the Civil War together. Nancy's first husband was killed in the war. I have been verifying the information via Census records and from the decendent of the various families. I am not sure where to connect John (1809). After the Civil war it seems most of the family returned to PA. The 1870 Census for hite Township, Indiana County, Penn lists: John 60; Sarah 47; Julietta 22; James 17; Loena 12; Rebecca 10; John 8; and Annie 4. There seem to be some missing from this list, but the older children were already married, Helen married John Albert Clawson on October 16, 1869, Martha died and martha died in January 1868. Persis, born 1868, is missing but later married and moved to California.
In the 1880 census John is listed in Vernon County, Wisconsin, as a widower, living the home of Nancy and Marion Alloway. However other information indicates Sarah did not die until December 4, 1880.
The 1850 census for Morgan County, OH lists John 41; Sarah 27; Archibald 15; Littia 13; George 12; Nancy 10; Abraham 8; Elizabeth 7; Susan 5; Mary 4; Drusilla 3; and Juliett 2.
Margaret is listed in the household of Nathan Henry.
Archie and Susan continued to live in the Morgan County until their deaths. Letitia, Nancy and Abraham moved to Vernon County, WI, where they are are buried in the same Cemetery. George moved to Iowa and Nebraska. Annie and Persis married brothers both moved to Iowa, then Persis and her husband moved on to California. Margaret and her husband, John Crossier, and three children were in Danville, PA in 1970. Elizabeth married and moved to Texas.
James died in Allegany County, PA. I am still working on the others.
