My great great grandfather, John McElhose, was born in Indiana County, PA in 1809. McElhoes is a fairly popular name in that area today. My grandmother, Sarah McElhose Knapp, use to tell that one of John's relatives had given him a chair. But John refused to sit in that chair because They had changed the spelling of the name. I believe, many of the people back in those days could not read and write. They may not have known how to spell their own name.
