Dear Rich,
Please forgive my tardiness in replying to your post.I either missed the notice of your posting or simply forgot to reply. You are correct in believing that the spelling of the name means much more to us today than it did to the people "back then" - and in County Cavan, the McElwain/McElwaine/McIlwaine etc lines seem likely to be connected if we could only find the proof!
I have not got the names you mentioned in my line (to my knowledge), but Coolnacola was certainly within the vicinity, and I have passed on your information to another McIlwaine researcher I know to see if you turn up in any of her gathered data.I will let you know if she discovers anything.
I do have a documented Byers in my family, but she was born in Canada and married into my Grainger line.Let me know if that sounds familiar! :)
