Hello McIlwee and McElwee hunters, I recently received the following information from the Donegal Ancestry. I asked them to search for any information on my greatgreatgrandfather James McIlwee born circa 1827 in the civil parish of Clondavaddog in the barony of Kilmacrenan, County Donegal, Ireland. Their "Householders Index" which is an index of all the persons given in the Griffith's Primary Valuation (1857-1858) and in the Tithe Applotment Books (1824-1838) showed that there were 26 McIlwee/McElwee properties listed for the barony of Kilmacrenan in which the civil parish is Clondavaddog. The distribution of these properties by parish was as follows: Augnish (9), Clondavaddog (8), Kilmacrenan (8) and Tullyfern (1). Here's the breakdown:

It is a tract of land that is located in the northernmost section of the Republic of Ireland. Loch Swilly is on its East and the Mulroy Bay is on its west. Many of these McIlwee/McElwee families left County Donegal for Scotland in the 1840s (famine) and others went to the United States. Many of these families went to Virginia and Philadelphia while mine went to Colorado in 1881. Hope the above info helps any of the McIlwee/ McElwee hunters out there. Please let me know any McIlwee/ McElwee information that you may have. Good luck, Roy McIlwee, Scranton, Pennsylvania.
