Kitty McElyea was the daughter of William Penn McElyea and Angelina Martin.
William Penn was the son of Hugh McElyea Jr. and Mary McElyea (a cousin we think). Angelina Martin was the daughter of James Martin and Nancy Goodson. Both are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Erath county, Texas. William Penn had a brother named William Carroll McElyea. I know...why would they name two children William? William Carroll was my g-g-g grandfather. They settled in Cherokee county, Texas.
The two Williams came to Texas from Jackson, Alabama.
The first McElyea known to this family was Laughlin McElyea who married Mary Powers. The story is he had 5 sons and one daughter. They were Patrick Henry, Hugh, William, John, James and Mary. As close as we can tell, Laughlin emmigrated to this country about 1749 from Ireland, although he has not been found on any passenger list. He is thought to be part of the Scot-Irish migration. He settled around York, PA. That is where his children were born. Laughlin is found on a York county tax list in 1762 as Ludwig McElyea. Earliest record is 1760 where his son John was baptized June 8, 1760. James was baptized May 9, 1762. The McElyea family left York, PA during the Revolution and migrated to North Carolina. Patrick Henry, William and James all served in the Revolution. James was killed. Laughlin died in North Carolina around 1793. The sons migrated to Tennessee and Illinois, with one or two stopping off in Virginia, then on to Alabama and a few went on to Texas.
Anyway, Hugh Jr. was the son of Hugh Sr. who was the son of Laughlin.
William Penn served in the Civil War so there are records.
Don't really have any information on Kitty other than who her parents and grandparents were.
There is a book called "McElyea's in Transit" by Clara Hunt Miller. It's possible you can get a copy of it. If you would like one, let me know.
