I'm look ingto just this problem today and have something to spice the pot. In Union Co., SC the Oral history of the SC branch of the Murphy famlily says that one of the sisters of Simon Murphy married a Magarity. I believe that was Mary. The Richard Murphy of your email would be most likely the brother of Simon Jr., and Richard married a Lucy. The John and Patrick are most likely those you describe. From somewhere I have noted - it escapes me just now and it may be the record that you quote- that Patrick Magarity is listed as the son of John and Mary. Anyway both John, Patrick, James and Kindred were listed in land transactions surrounding the Murphy land in Union Co. prior to 1800, and one in particular is interesting in that it states Kindred McGarrity of Elbert Co., GA sold land granted to Patrick McGarity. Hence I suspect a close familial relationship between all these McGaritys. John disappears from the Union Co records just before the 1800 census. And of course the British burned some records in the war of 1812 which just happened to include the early GA censuses, I'm told.
