Dear McGavock descendants and fellow history/genealogy buffs:
One of most genealogists’ goals is to locate the final resting place of their pioneer ancestors, especially if one of those ancestors is recorded on the NSDAR patriot list.Often when we go looking for such a site we get a shoulder shrug and a comment like, “There used to an old burying ground over in that field or those woods, but there’s nothing left now.”
If you are descended from or interested in James McGavock, SR. and his wife Mary Cloyd McGavock, I can direct you to their final resting place and:
1)The graves are clearly marked and easily accessible. 2)The graves are lovingly cared for by their descendent. 3)There is a NSDAR plaque at the cemetery recognizingJames McGavock, SR. as a Revolutionary War Patriot. 4)The cemetery is on a major travel route. 5)There is an outlet mall next to the site so your spouse, children or traveling companions can shop while you visit the cemetery.
The McGavock-Tate cemetery is listed as a Virginia Historical Landmark, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is located at the junction of I-77 North and I-81 just East of Wytheville, VA.The cemetery is on a rise next to the Fort Chiswell outlet mall. There are about 75 graves in the cemetery and an inventory of the graves can be accessed on the Internet at www.rootsweb.com/~vapulask/indexcemeteries.html and click on McGavock cemetery.
The site is being maintained at this time by Mr. Davy McGavock Davis, P.O. Box 328 Max Meadows, VA 24360.Mr. Davis is caring for the cemetery on his own time and with his own funds. There is a trust fund called The MacGavock-Tate Cemetery Fund that was established to take care of the site, but the funds have been largely expended over the years. I would hope to see every descendent of the original McGavocks or interested persons write Mr. Davis a letter of thanks and, if you are so moved, include a donation to the cemetery fund to help care for the site as I have done.
The cemetery fund does not have tax-deductible status to my knowledge. If you are interested in more information or updates on the cemetery, send me your e-mail address and I will try to reply to your questions. Sincerely, Randall M. Anderson, SR. email@example.com James’ and Mary’s 5th great-grandson
