The David McGibboney mentioned in Patrick McGibboney's will was his son, born in 1790. Patrick's oldest daughter, Margaret, was married to Patrick Gillespie, (son of Col. Daniel G)., whom Patrick McG. believed needed to reform for Margaret to inherit.Apparently, Patrick G. did not "reform"and after margaret's death in 1808 (I believe) David and his 3 sisters brought suit against Patrick G.,andhis son (and Margaret's) Daniel. The litigation papers were first served in 1813, I think, and in that brief the Plaintiffs were named:David McGibboney, Robert Gilchrist and wife Martha, (McGibboney), Samuel Gilchrist and wife Isobel, Isaiah Weatherly and wife Jean.(women had no say in court, Iguess, so the husbands were named.I have always presumed these Gilchrists to be the sons of John and Jean Gilchrist who came to Guilford county from Lancaster County, PA.Samuel Gilchrist died in 1816 and Martha McGibboney Gilchrist died before 1817, I believe. Both had children.I have wondered but never found what happened to Isobel McGibboney Gilchrist, widow of Samuel.David McGibboney, son of Patrick, was an "infant" when Patrick died in 1804.The next year when he was 15, the court appointed William Armfield as his guardian until he reach his majority. In Patrick's will he named James Denny as daughter Jean's guardian.
My gr-gr-grandfather, David McGibboney, who is also ancestor of Ed Schulenberg and Freda Cunningham, was born in 1779, according to the Allison Family Bible Record, before the 1783 marriage of Patrick McGibboney and Margaret Work.Henry Work's will mentins his daughter's husband as Patrick McGibboney.(That may not be the words;I don't have any of the information in front of me and am trying to remember correctly. It is believed that in other papers Henry Work refers to a daughter Jean, and Peggy (the latter a nick-name for Margaret.I think she may have been Margaret Jean Work and I think they named the oldest and youngest daughter after her. (Maybe!) )
"Our" David married Elizabeth Allison, dau. of John Allison and Mary Shaw Allison, in November of 1811.The Guilford County publication of Marriage Bonds has it incorrectly as David and Elizabeth Elliott. At the time of their publication we had not found the Bible so they just misread the marriage bond. With a stretch it could look like Elliott, but with our knowledge of our David's and Elizabeth's marriage date, it is quite plainly, "Ellison".(a mis-spelling of Allison which was common)
Incidentally, I now live in NC and have discovered that the locals pronounce Allison, Alec and Alexander as Ellison, Elec and Elexander, and probably have done so for 2 centuries. Thus a clerk hearing the name wrote it down as it sounded.I have never found anything to back up the claim that Patrick had a son John who went to Mecklinburg County, NC.Seems he would have mentioned John in his will, wouldn't you think?I think, rather, that the John in Guilford County as early as 1788 could be Patrick's brother and could be father of "our" David.MERE CONJECTURE!There was an Alexander McKibbon (McGibboney) in Rockingham County, NC, who might have been the son of a John Gibboney who died in PA in mid 1700s and perhaps the father of Haw River John and perhaps "our" David's grandfather.David and Elizabeth's first son was John and I have heard that it was John Alexander McG.
Enough now.I have promised some of you that I would send copies of the Bible Record and other papers to you through the US mail and have not done so.Please accept ;my apologies.I just haven't been able to gather all of the paper together and get it done before an onslaught of Bed & Breakfast guests descend upon me.I will.
Carol
