Well, it has been quite a while since I last posted, so I took some time to do some more research to see if I could locate anymore information on the parents of this ancestor of mine.Well after a few months of staring at the family tree I have yielded no new information. So I am to the point where I need help from an outside source.Listed below is what I can give you, it is not much, but perhaps someone on this forum may have seen this name before and can tell me his origins.
Joseph McGill was born in September of 1839 in one of 3 places(sucks, but that is what I was able to locate). One census record says Maryland, another says Virginia, and another says West Virginia. As if I wasn't having a tough enough time already. Lol.He eventually made his way here to Michigan where he passed away in 1903.I found a death certificate in Traverse City, Michigan and confirm that this was in fact the right feller.
He married a Catharine Mull in Pennsylvania, I am not exactly sure when. And they had at least 6 kids that I can account for. James and Hezekiah were born in Ohio, and the rest seem to be born here in Michigan.
When I did a search for Traverse City, I discovered that there were other McGill families living in that Area, Long Lake I believe?I suspect Joseph may have been related to these guys, but I haven't found the smoking gun to prove this yet.Family lore says that they were of Native American descent, again something that I haven't been able to prove as of yet, but since Joseph may have been born in Virginia or West Virginia there is the possibility that it could be true.
If it helps, Catharine may have been a Mulatto, at least according to a record that I did find, Catharine's mother was listed like that.It could be White and African American, or she could have been Native American and African American.
In short, I have this needle in a very big Haystack.Has anyone seen these names appear in their family search?
