Mcgavern/Mcgavren is the surname I am researching of my ancestors. THrough our history our name has been Mcgavern/Mcgavren/Mcgarrow/Mcgarvin, and who know what other variation. Mcgivern is so close I wonder if there might be a connection since the names tend to pickup and lose a letter here and there and they sound so similar. I would love to hear from any one of you that might have an opinion on this theory.
My George Mcgavren was born August 15, 1778in the border region of Scotland, very close to the English border, along the Cheviot Hills. His family was offered the opportunity to move to a plantation in
Ireland to leave behind the endless fighting along the border. In about 1785 when
George was 7 years old the family made the move to Ireland and settled in
County Monaghan, adjacent to County Armagh.During the next 10 years
Georgelearned and practiced the weaving trade and Irish type fighting.Since
other family members had already gone on to America he decided to follow in 1799.It took him 2 1/2 years of working and moving around before he had the money for passage and records show he arrived unindentured through the port of Philadelphia as George MCGARROW April 2, 1802 having sailed from
Londonderry, Ireland. He settled in Indiana County, Pennsylvania while clearing land and farming and practicing his trade as a weaver.Tax rolls in 1804 Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania show him as George MCGARVIN as land owner and taxpayer. In 1807 the same property shows George MCGARROW
then in 1810 census same property shows him as George Mcgavren. So we know it is one in the same our George.
George died: August 27, 1853 Auglaize county, Ohio
George met and married:
Nancy J. Ewartbefore 1809 while in Pennsylvania and had 12 children and
only 6 boys and 1 girl lived to adulthood.
She was born December 23, 1782 inGlenbank, County of Antrim, northern Ireland. Her grandfather Thomas Ewart emigrated thru Scotland on to Ireland
from his native Denmark.Nancy emigrated to America with her brother Samual Ewartas early as 1800 range and arrived in Indiana County, Pennsylvania in 1804 through the port of Philadelphia. She met and married George Mcgavren shortly after her arrival. We can speculate they may have met during
George's travels from County Monaghan to his port of embarkation. Nancy was living with her son Robert Mcgavern when she died July 7, 1861 in St.Johns, Iowa and was buried in the family plot in Oak Grove Cemetary.
