Does anyone have any information about the McGlone family who migrated to Victoria Australia, maybe they posted letters back to Ireland? or photographs?
Mr. James McGlone was born in Armagh, Ireland in about 1799 and, from his death certificate, was the son of a farmer Patrick and came to the colony in about 1853. The 1856 Electoral Roll describes him as a shopkeeper, freeholder with two houses in Smith Street and a house in Little Oxford Street. The 1859 directorysays he had a general store at 164-166 Smith Street Collingwood. He is described as a Boot and Shoe dealer with a shop at 164Smith Street in 1870 (S&M) which after his death in 1874 was run by his son Stephen. James McGlone is also described as an Importer 1864 (R), Store Keeper 1866 (R), a Dealer 1867 (R) and of course he was renting out his properties in Collingwood. His wife was Catherine McGlone (about 1814-1882) and they had 5 children one of whom Ann has no details so presumably died in infancy, Patrick (about 1839-1857), Stephen (about 1834-1894), Susan (sometimes Susannah about 1842-1912), Maria (about 1845- 1922) and Hugh (about 1847-1907).There is a shipping record for Hugh and Stephen to Sydney in the “Rangatira” in 1873.
Stephen, Susannah and Maria were the owners of the terrace 10-20 Gore Street built by their father. The family members lived in 2 Gore Street (number 10, now demolished).
