Good News!! We now know that Charles M. McGlothlen's parents were John and Sarah McLaughlin. John and Sara were both born in or about 1754. John enlisted in Bedford Co, VA in February 1776 in the 5th VA Line and fought in the Rev War. In 1818, he and Sarah were living near Eddyville, KY, which is now in Lyon county. He was then almost blind and had a debilitating palsey in his lower legs, all of which prevented him from continuing his farming work. He applied then for a Rev War Invalid's pension, which was granted. In 1827, he relocated to Lafayette Co, MO to live with his son, John McGlothlin, Jr. John Sr died there on 17 July 1828. We know his widow, Sarah, was alive in 1830 in nearby Ray Co, MO.We also know the names of John Jr's siblings that were still alive in 1828. They were: Susannah (McLaughlin) Keny, Margaret (McLaughlin) Lewis, Elizabeth (McLaughlin) Lewis, Rebecca (McLaughlin) Davis, Mary Hannah "Polly" (McGlothlen) Keeney and Charles M. McGlothlen. I am now working on finding information about Charles M's siblings and more about his parents.
Note that our surname spelling varied in the above paragraphs. This appears to be the actual case, as court records in which John Sr and John Jr both appear show the McLaughlin and McGlothlin spelling, while we know that Mary Hannah and Charles M. used the McGlothlen spelling. It will be interesting to see where the above new information leads.
Don McGlothlen, 4th great grandchild of John McLaughlin, Sr.
