Thomas Mills McGouirk(1872-1963)was my grandfather. His parents were Florida Smith (1853-1934)& John T. McGouirk (aka "Thurmon") who died of a heart attack in Aug 1879 when my grandfather was seven. My grandfather's g-grandmother, Margaret "Peggy" Caldwell (Colwell) & her daughter, Sarah Caldwell (both born in SC), helped to raise Florida's children after her grandson's death in 1849. Florida married JC Presley in 1881. The 3 eldest McGouirk sons continued living with their mother and new step-father; the youngest, William McGouirk (1877-1929) was raised by SW McLarty and his wife, Melissa Minervia Bobo. (Their daughter, Annie Elizabeth McLarty (1876-1947) became the wife of Thomas Mills McGouirk in 1894.) I am most interested in uncovering the Caldwell side of the McGouirks, particularly Margaret's and her husband's parentage, and the Smith side.My grandfather believed his mother's father's name was "John" and her mother was "Linda" (who was also born a Smith) and that Florida had a sister and two brothers (one was John H Smith who married Martha Bobo in 1865.) John Smith (b. SC about 1821) supposedly survived Linda. There is a memorial in Douglasville City Cemetery for John & Linda Smith.(However, census records seem to indicate that Florida's parents were James and Elizabeth.) As for the Caldwell side, Margaret and her husband had 2 daughters, Sarah Caldwell and Annie Caldwell McGouirk (also known as "Mary" who was my grandfather's grandmother.) It was believed that the Caldwells also had a son who died before my grandfather was born in 1872. Margaret outlived her husband and children. I would be grateful for any information you can share, and would be happy to share what I have with you.
