There is no verifiable evidence that shows William left Lucy, but the story has been passed down through the family for generations.Jackson McGrady's marriage record gives his mother as Lucy McGrady and father unknown.Jackson's great-grandson, Parley P. Huff, left a letter which states the story. He said he learned it from his mother who died in 1911. He quotes Jackson as stating his father was John Hale.
I personally cannot trace back beyond William and as far as I know, no one knows who John Hale was. He may have been a relative of Lewis Hale (who md Mary Burwell) who was an early settler in Grayson County.Lewis came out of Lancaster County.
I can't assign Lucy Spence to definite parents, but she was related to Burwell Spence in Grayson (who md Rebecca Puckett.)
Lucy left Oldtown (West of present day Galax) in the early 1830's, moving to land owned Burwell Spence, on Burks Fork Creek near the Floyd Co. line. She moved again in the 1840's, settling just west of Laurel Fork Church.
Lucy's name last appeared in the 1860 census. It is believed she died about the year 1865 and probably was buried in the Spence Cemetery, .5 mile northwest of Laurel Fork Church.
