I am a gg grandson of Catherine McHan (1810-abt 1875) and Eli Bowman (1790-abtt 1872). They are buried in the cemetary of Mountain Creek Baptist Church about 10 miles NW of Rutherfordton, N.C. The Bowman homestead was about 2.5 miles west of the church on the Shingletree Branch of the NW fork of Mountain Creek. Matthew McHan owned and operated a mill in Rutherford County close to the gold-mining region. Most of the McHans moved to the west and south as the Cherokee lands opened after 1830, many settling in the Murray/Whitfield County area of Georgia near Dalton. When Sherman's army came through that area in 1864 the people suffered many hardships. Through the Bowmans the McHans were related to the Richardsons, Harbins and Youngs, some of whom also were in the area from Lumpkin County, Ga. to Dalton in the NW corner of the state.
