McHargs Scotland
Just an update for the surname McHarg. I am from Stranraer now in Dumfries and Galloway (ex-Wigtownshire) and my father David McHarg was from Glasgow and his father was from Minishant in Ayrshire. The McHargs generally originate from Ayrshire, Girvan Maybole area although very few still live there, if any at all.
It is interesting to read how many are in the USA / Canada and checking records see that a lot came from this area so basically all are related distantly.
Although I no longer live in Stranraer I often go back to Ayrshire as my mother still lives in Scotland. From this forum I will now check the records in the Parish churches of Maybole and Girvan for more records and update this some time in the future.
Just a brief history, the McHarg name was connected to 'ploughmen' many of the McHargs being farmers and ploughmen. As a child I was always told that the name came from the Graham clan and was surprised seeing that some people think this is rubbish. More info would be appreciated.
Thanks
Gordon McHarg
