Thanks for responding Susan. This is the off-list email I sent to you- That bounced.
This line has become my centerpoint again after a long pause. My cousin and I have struggled with the McIlwain's and Ireland for many years. My email address has changed since I posted my message on Genealogy.com.You can contact off list at AP R ic ot at BE rk dot com. Sorry for the spam munging. All lower case.
I can tell you that Samuel is a name that runs through the McIlwain family, but then so does David, James and William. When one searches the LDS site it seems there are a multitude of William's and James' to choose from.My William McIlwain has an estimated birth of about 1835+/- five years. He married Betsy Ann Morrison and had several children then went to Scotland- from there the family split and some went back to the Belfast area, some remained in the Ballynahinch-Saintfield area and some remained in Scotland-Glasgow area. A line from this family came to the USA in the late 1950's. They have been a difficult lot to find and follow. The LDS tells me that William and Eliza Anne Morrison had a child called Agnes in 1864 in Annahilt. It's a shame because I have information on several other children born to them whose information was found in family records and on ScotlandsPeople. This William is my GGgrandfather and, both he and Betsy died in Scotland.Unfortunately, I have no clue as to who his parents were or if he truly was born in Co. Down. That is something I have been told by elder family members as fact yet to be proven.I suspect he had a brother James and would not be surprised if there were a David or Samuel also included. Right now I am concentrating on searching between Ballynahinch-Saintfield-Annahilt-Boardmills area of County Down. There are about four other couples I am looking at as possible siblings or cousins due to the fact that there are middle names that tie into the family at different times.
What happened to the five children that Margaret gave birth to- did they go to Canada with their father orwas that marriage and move after they were adults or able to fend for themselves? Who was the second wife- was she from Co. Down?
Lots of questions from me- can I give you any more info for your end?
