Thanks for posting this photo. I'm descended from him on my mother's side of the family. I had heard about this marker. I doubt that I will ever go there. He was too old to fight in the war, but two of his sons, Joseph and Daniel, did. They are both buried in SC. Samuel was a representative sent from his community to vote for or against ratification of the Constitution. He voted against it, along with many others from upstate SC.

FL DAR Markers (15 months ago)
There are 55 members of DAR who have been verified to this man. He may not have fought, but he is considered a Patriot, nonetheless. His service is listed as both Civil and Patriotic, as a Member of Legislature in 1782, and a juror.

Migration to America:
Samuel McJunkin purportedly migrated to America in about 1740; he married Ann Bogan at Holy Trinity (Old Swede's) Church in Wilmington, Delaware on 9 September 1754. His first son, Joseph, was born in Chester County, PA on 22 June 1755.
To avoid Indian problems along the PA frontier, the family migrated to South Carolina, arriving in the Tinker Creek area of what is now Union County, SC on 24 December 1755. All of Samuel's other children, starting with Daniel, were born in this area of the South Carolina Colony. A number of other families migrated to South Carolina and settled on Tinker Creek with the McJunkin's, including the Brandon's, Bogan's, Young's, Steen's and Kennedy's.
The earliest mention of Samuel McJunkin, Sr. in the official records of South Carolina, that have been found, is when he surveyed a 150-acre tract of land located on Tinker Creek, on 23 May 1765. He received a patent for this land on 13 February 1768.
South Carolina historical note: Until 1868 there were districts instead of counties.
Samuel McJunkin was too old for active campaigning during the Revolution, but urged the Colonists to revolt and was imprisioned for his efforts. He recognized the new government by serving as a Juror.
Birth date wrongly given as 05 Sep 1725 in Broderbund "World Family Tree", Vol 18, Tree 1184.
Samuel served in the American Revolution and in the South Carolina Legislature.
Military Service Bet. 1759 - 1760 Served with Col. Chevillette and Capt. Ed. Musgrove in the Cherokee Expedition from Ft. Prince George, SC.

In 1807, although 82 years of age, and a widower - Ann Bogan McJunkin died during the Revolution while nursing her son, Major Joseph McJunkin, of smallpox - he decided to move to Indiana with his daughter Jane McDaniel, and others along the new trail opened through Kentucky.En route to Indiana he died on the Boone's Trail in Kentucky in 1807, and was buried in an unmarked grave by the Trail road.

JAMES McJUNKIN was one of the early settlers of Butler county. Three brothers, James, John and William McJUNKIN, immigrated from the North of Ireland to Pennsylvania about 1796. James and William settled near what is now known as Muddy Creek church, in Butler county, in 1799. The former was born in 1777, and died in 1833. He married for his first wife Asenath TURK. She was born in Ireland in 1788, and her family were among the first settlers of Parker township, Butler county. She was the mother of two sons, David and William. Mr. McJUNKIN was married to Nancy TURNER, in 1818, who became the mother of eight children: Mary; James T.; Hannah; Samuel; John R.; Sarah J.; Martha, and Susan.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pabutler/1883/83-36.htmhttp://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pabutler/1883/83-36.htm
The first settlements in Centre were made about 1796.
Probably no one family were more prominent in the early settlement of the township than that of David MCJUNKIN, who settled here in the autumn of 1796. David MCJUNKIN served as a soldier during the war of 1812-14. He was born in Ireland in 1778, and came to America when six years of age, with this father, William MCJUNKIN, who located in Plum Township, Allegheny Co., Penn. William MCJUNKIN reared a family of three sons - William, James and David - and six daughters. One son of the family, David, made this county his home.
When eighteen years of age, David, accompanied by his brother William, came to Centre Township and each located 400 acres of land, and moved into their little cabins, and commenced the life of pioneers. The succeeding spring, William was so dissatisfied with his pioneer experiences that he return home and remained there, but succeeded, though the assistance of David, in getting some one to represent him on his lands until he came in possession by right of settlement.
David was a man of great physical strength and resolute will, therefore not easily discouraged, and setting manfully about the laborious task of clearing and tilling his farm, he became one of the largest and most extensive farmers in the township and county.
In the early days many prosperous farmers engaged in the business of distilling whisky, and David built a distillery for this purpose, but being a man of strong religious convictions, and becoming convinced that the business was prejudicial to the best interest of the people, he abandoned the enterprise. He, however, engaged very extensively in tanning leather and saddlery, and erected one of the early and most extensive tanneries on his farm in the county, and conducted this enterprise very successfully for many years, its immediate supervision ultimately falling under the control of his son William.

General Notes: Tombstone inscription:
Sacred
To
the memory of
Mrs. Ann McJunkin
The wife of Major Jos. McJunkin
and daughter of Col. John Thomas
who departed this life March 17th
1826.
Aged 69 Years.
The deceased was an intrepid heroine of the
revolution, who with the aid of her
mother, brother, & brother in law defended
her father's house with success against the
attack of 300 Tories.
Lord I am thine but thou will prove
My faith, my patience, and my love
When men of spite against me join
They are the sword, the hand is thine
Their hope and portion lie below
'Tis all the happiness they know
'Tis all they seek; they take their shares
And leave the rest among their heirs.
What sinners value I resign;
Lord 'tis enough that thou art mine
I shall behold thy blissful face
And stand complete in righteousness.
This life's a dream an empty show;
But the bright world, to which I go,
Hath joys substantial and sincere;
When shall I wake and find me there?
O glorious hour; O blest abode
I shall be near and with my God;
And flesh and sin no more control,
The sacred pleasures of the soul.
My flesh shall slumber in the ground,
Till the last trumpet's joyful sound;
Then burst the chains with sweet surprise,
And in my savior's image rise.

Three South Carolina Sites Associated With Revolutionary "Feminist" Jane Black Thomas (1720-1811)
Jane Black Thomas could be called South Carolina's first feminist. Had the word existed, she never would have approved of such a radical term for herself, given her conservative, strict Presbyterian upbringing and her standing as a bedrock pillar of the Fairforest Presbyterian Church. She would have been pleased, however, to discover herself described as a "sincere and spirited whig"-a Patriot-who fought for independence of the American colonies.
When Pennsylvania-born Jane Black and her husband, Welshman John Thomas, brought their children from Pennsylvania to South Carolina around 1749, they and their accompanying Scot-Irish-Welsh neighbors found themselves up to their necks in Cherokee Indian territory. Their first homestead on Fishing Creek at Catawba River and the second, in 1762 on Fairforest Creek in the Upper or Broad River District, had to be defended constantly from marauding Cherokees and allied tribes. Just when it seemed a decade of self-defense had brought some peace and stability to the Upper Piedmont, the Revolutionary War broke out in the northeast and swept southward.
Jane's husband John had been commander of the area's loyalist militia, taking part in Braddock's defeat in 1755 and in the "snow campaign" against the Cherokees in 1762. When the British-colonial hostilities began in the early 1770s, John Thomas resigned his English commission and formed the Patriots' Spartan Regiment in 1775. He was elected colonel and commander of the militia, in which the older Thomas sons-John, Jr., Abram, and Robert-and several sons-in-law served. The Thomas matriarch, her daughters, and her daughters-in-law all were as immersed in the defense of the Upper Piedmont as their men - for more information see Ilene Jones Cornwell E-mail: [email protected]

Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia extracted from the original court records of Augusta county, Virginia 1745-1800
by Lyman Chalkley.3 vols. John Thomas is listed as surveyor. Spartanburg neighbors are the Black family.John Thomas and John Black are listed as Justices 1777-1778.
About 60 miles southeast of Spartanburg is another site associated with Jane Black Thomas' courage: The National Park Service's Ninety Six Historic Site, where Jane's husband John and two of their sons, Abram and Robert, were imprisoned in the two-story brick jail in June of 1780. http://www.rootsweb.com/~scsparta/sparta_troops.htmhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~scsparta/sparta_troops.htmWhen Jane went to visit her menfolk on July 11, she overheard two Tory women talking. One woman said to the other, "Tomorrow night the Loyalists intend to surprise the Rebels at Cedar Spring."
Jane's heart must have missed several beats upon hearing of the planned attack. Cedar Spring, a few miles from the Thomas home, was where her firstborn, John, had headquartered about 60 members of the reorganized Spartan Regiment. Several of her sons-in-law and various kin were at Cedar Spring with the Flying Camp--a name often applied to the Spartan Regiment because of its frequency of action and movement. The little, black-haired Irishwoman didn't wait around for confirmation of the overheard Tory gossip. She rushed to her horse and made a hasty departure from Ninety Six jail, heading northwest to warn the Spartans of the impending attack. She rode over 60 miles of rough, forbidding terrain during the night and through the following day, arriving at Cedar Spring with the timely warning. Then, as Jane rode on to her home, a plan was drawn up to entrap the Tories. The Spartans built up their campfires at dusk to burn brightly near improvised bedrolls. Then the men withdrew and hid themselves in the surrounding forest. They hadn't long to wait. Shortly after preparations were complete, 150 British and Tory soldiers cautiously advanced to surprise the "sleeping" Spartans. The soldiers suddenly found themselves attacked from the rear by the militia they had expected to surprise. "Thrown into confusion by this unexpected reception, defeat, overwhelming defeat, was the consequence to the loyalists. . .The victory thus easily achieved they owed to the spirit and courage of a woman!"
After the Revolutionary War's conclusion, Jane Black Thomas established yet another homestead in the western frontier. In 1785 she and John Thomas moved to the vicinity of Greenville, when Colonel Thomas was appointed commissioner of land locations for the new Greenville County. Here the couple resided and prospered until their deaths just six months apart in 1811.
Until the day of her death on April 16, 1811, this spunky "feminist" adamantly refused to drink tea, saying it was "the blood of the poor men who first fell in the war" (and two of her sons and two sons-in-law were among those slain in battle). Jane Black Thomas remained a "sincere and spirited whig" -a Patriot-to the very end of her 91 years.

Jane Chesney is the sister of the well known Loyalist leader, Alexander Chesney. Alexander Chesney's "Journal" is a primary source of information on the Revolutionary War in the SC Backcountry.
My understanding is that there was much consternation in the McJunkin family, particularly from Daniel's brother, Major Joseph McJunkin, when Daniel married the sister of a leading Tory. At the time, in 1782, the Revolution was virtually over, but ill feeling between the loyalists and rebels lasted for many years after the end of the War.
Jane Chesney's family had arrived in South Carolina from Ulster Province, Ireland, in October 1772. After a few months search for good land, the family settled on a 400-acre tract on the north side of Pacolet River near Grindal Shoals, about 12 miles from where the Pacolet empties into the Broad River. At the time, this land was in the Ninety-Six District of SC, in that part which, after the Revolution, became Union County.

James MCJUNKIN came from the North of Ireland, and in the year 1798 located upon the 400-acre tract now owned for the most part by his son, John R. MCJUNKIN. The first night int he wilderness was passed by sleeping upon a huge sandstone rock, which stood near the site of the large barn on the homestead. A small log cabin was erected at once, however, which served as a dwelling until about 1830, when a substantial house of hewed logs was built, to be succeeded in turn by the present brick structure, which was erected in 1861, by John R. MCJUNKIN. The elder Mr. MCJUNKIN (James) was married soon after his settlement in this county to Miss TURK, and by her he had two sons, viz., David and William. She died early, and in 1818 he was married again to Miss Nancy TURNER. The children by this marriage were Mary Ann, James, Hannah, Samuel, John R. and Sarah J., twins, Martha and Susan; of whom James, John C., Hannah, Sarah J. and Susan are living. The father died March 6, 1833, and his second wife, February 25, 1858. When James MCJUNKIN died, he left his wife and a large family of little ones still struggling upon an encumbered estate, the conditions of its purchase not yet fulfilled. As a consequence, men denominated in those days "land jobbers," ever on the alert to take advantage of one's pecuniary distress, stepped forward and obtained possession of three-fourths of the tract. However, the widow and the children managed successfully. One of her sons was elected County Register and Recorder, also to represent this district in the State Legislature, while another son (John R.) besides being known as one of the most respected citizens of the township and county, has succeeded in again obtaining possession of 350 of the 400 acres first settled by his father, and also owns eighty acres in a separate tract. James MCJUNKIN, Sr., had two brothers, viz., David and John, and two sisters, who settled in this part of the county, besides a cousin named William MCJUNKIN, who was the first to occupy the BRACKNEY farm.
In the MCJUNKIN neighborhood was erected the first church edifice (in church history) and the first school building in this part of Butler County. The first schoolhouse, which stood near the present Muddy Creek Presbyterian Church, was built in 1827, of the logs which formed the first church building. One side of the interior was occupied by a large fire place. In summer an opening the width of one log extending around the three remaining sides, afforded space for the penetration of light. In winter these open spaces were covered with greased paper. The building when used either as a church or schoolhouse, had no floor, and the sittings were rude and rough benches hewed from the trunks of trees. Thomas ALLEN, Joseph STERRITT and Stephen ALLEN were the early subscription teachers. After the adoption of the free school law in 1834, Daniel CARTER and others, among them, John R. MCJUNKIN officiated as teachers.
James married Asenath Turk in 1804 in Butler County, PA. Asenath was born in 1788 in Ireland.
Children from this marriage were:
67 M i. David Mc Junkin.
68 M ii. William Mc Junkin.
69 M iii. John R. 'Squire' Mc Junkin.
James next married Nancy Turner in 1818 in PA.

JAMES T. McJUNKIN, eldest son of James and Nancy McJUNKIN, was born in 1820 upon the old homestead. He received a common school education and in early life taught school for several years. In 1848 he was elected to the office of register and recorder, and re-elected in 1851. He engaged in the insurance business in 1860, and from that date up to 1873 followed that busines in connection with a foundry and marble shop. In 1867 he was elected to the legislature, and served in the sessions of 1868-69. He continued in the insurance business to the time of his death, March 16, 1885. He married Martha, daughter of John ROSE, a native of New Jersey, but a resident of Butler, and his family consisted of seven children, as follows: John P., who died February 6, 1866; Agnes D., widow of George A. General Notes:
The transcription I have of the tombstone appears to be wrong. He was born in 1780, not 1770-ish as the stones age of "44 years" would put it, making him 35 years at death. Also, the coroner's inquest states he died 1815.
Tombstone inscription:
Erected
To The Memory Of
Capt. Samuel McJunkin
Who Died The
First Day of June, 1814
Aged 44 Years.
Death like an overflowing stream
Sweeps us away, our life's a dream
An empty tale, a morning flow'r
Cut down & withered in an hour.

Samuel McJunkin served in the War of 1812 as a horse farrier under Captain James Monroe. By occupation, he was both a blacksmith and gunsmith.
NOTES FOR CATHERINE ELIZABETH KERR
In about 1837, Elizabeth, who was half Cherokee, removed to Arkansas - probably with a group of Cherokees that were forced to remove west of the Mississippi. Prior to the Cherokee removal, the couple had experienced serious marital difficulties. Elizabeth claimed that she had been abused by Samuel; the couple were formally divorced on 23 August 1841. When she departed to Arkansas, Elizabeth took three of her four children with her, i. e., Hester, Tilman and Juliette; these three children lived out their lives and died in Arkansas. Thadeus Turk McJunkin stayed behind in Tennessee.

"Joined the Church of Christ in
LaGrange, GA 01/1840
thence to LaFayette, AL 1849
thence to Lebany Church, AL 1866."
The inscription is no longer readable on the slab Dec. 2007.
The huge concrete platform that covers their graves was done I believe in the 1920's by Dewitt Sharp & his son Hershal, who married Lilla McJunkin, granddaughter of Theo & Adella. I think this because they also did concrete work in the Sharp Family Cemetery a few miles away.
Possibly married before Adella?
Theo's name has been spelled may different ways, I myself have been using the spelling of Theophelis. But after much research the concensus on his name is Theophilus.
Theo. McJunkin signed bond on will of Theodore Johnson in 1853.Also signing was Cicero Heath, brother of Adella, Theo. McJunkin's wife.Chambers Co., AL

You may often see her name as some variation of Ardella, but there was no "R" officially in her name. The pronunciation may have stressed an "R" but written it should be Adella.
Adella was the baby of 12 children. Her parents were almost 50 when they had her.
***Adella's stone reads: 12/18/1832 - 04/09/1896, but her obituary (07/20/1898) states she died 05/27/1898!***

Mrs. Ardella A. McJunkins was born in Newton County, Georgia in 1832 and was married to Theopholis W. McJunkin of Union District, South Carolina in 1857. She was converted and joining the Methodist Church in 1842 and continued a faithful and consistent member until she was transferred by the Great Head of the Church to the church triumphant on the 27th day of May, 1898.
Modest and unassuming, gentle and kind, faithful and true, hers was a character to be admired whenever and where ever found. A Christian experience of fifty-six years, ripened as it grew older, it shed a halo of beneficent love throughout the bounds of an extended acquaintance.
Naturally sympathetic and easily touched, as feeble as she was, it seemed a labor of love for her to minister to the wants and necessities of those around her, especially at the bedside of the sick and dying. She was devoted to the church, and was ever present attending upon its ordinances unless prevented by sickness. Her life was an inspiration and benediction to all who came within the charmed circle of her Christian influence. It was her highest aspiration to live a consistent Christian life - to do good and get good, hence she was always found being and doing for the Master.
It was the pleasure of this writer to visit her several times during her sickness, and always found her perfectly resigned to suffer her affliction, which she did with much patience, fortitude and courage. It was her great joy to hear the precious promises of God read, and then have prayer offered in which she always joined her feeble voice.
Just a short time before laying down this mortal to put on immortality, she called her children around her bedside and bade them continue to follow her as she had followed Christ. She was the mother of nine children, three of whom with her husband preceded her to the Kingdom. Six are left to mourn her loss, but cherish her memory. She was a good wife, a kind, faithful, never tiring, loving, tender mother, a good neighbor and a true Christian.
Owing to the absence of the writer at the time of her death, the funeral service was not held, but will be some time in the near future.
Her pastor, George W. Hall
(She was actually mother of 10 children, but one died shortly after birth)
