Jennifer,
I have been in contact with the man you mentioned and got the answer to my query. Here's the story. I also have a photo of a Laurel McKamie from CA that I can't figure out how she relates to this group, but know she does:
Louise Iverna PETERS b. 18 Feb 1905 CA d. 11 Apr 1984 Kern Co CA m. Joseph Eleven McKAMIE b. 8 Nov 1895 Kimble MO d. 19 Feb 1982 Kern Co CA. (His mothers maiden name is listed as Daley). His WWI draft registration card lists his middle name as Eleven (common in MO), but he apparently started using Leven. Before he was married he listed himself as a farmer in Tulare, CA and stated he had served 7 mos as a Seaman in the U.S. Navy. He was of medium build with brown hair and brown eyes.He was an oil worker and they both registered as Democrats living at 707 Pierce St, Ford City, Taft.
There appears to have been quite a family story behind Joseph Eleven McKamie which involves the spelling of his last name. He was the son of Marion Pleasant Wood McCamey b. 29 Oct 1853 in Washington Co Arkansas d. 22 Dec 1942 in Tulare, CA. who had married on 5 Jan 1890 in Cedar Bluff, Pulaski Co MO, Margaret Matinda Daley Kivett b. 9 Apr 1863 in Arlington MO d. 2 Jan 1897.This was a 2nd marriage for Margaret as she had previously married an unknown KivettFamily history says that Marion Pleasant Wood McCamey changed his name from McCamey to McKamie after he got angry with his brother-in-law in Arkansas and shot him (he did not die from the gunshot.) He ran away to Missouri and never returned to Arkansas. Marion Wood McCamey/McKamie began working as a carpenter in Missouri. While putting on a roof with several other men, a man rode by on a horse, shot the owner of the house (Kivitt) and killed him. The owner Kivitt had a wife (Margaret() and small son (William). Marion Wood McKamie married this widow several years later. Marion Wood and Margaret McKamie went on to have 3 children of their own: James Martin McKamie b. 6 Nov 1890 Licking, MO d. 6 Nov 1970 Vallejo, Oakland, CA; Mary Ellen McKamie b. 14 July 1893 d 15 Nov 1972 (married Edward Marion), and last, Joseph Eleven McKamie born 8 Nov 1895. It is this last child who married Louise Ivina Peters. The wife Margaret (Daley) (Kivitt) McKamie died when son Joseph Eleven McKamie was just a toddler, so it is likely his own family history was lost to him. His father Marion Wood McKamie, now a widower with four children to care for-- placed the children in various homes. He placed young Joseph Eleven McKamie and the stepson born from the first marriage (William T. Kivett b 6 June 1885 d. 1 Dec 1979 in Bakersfield, CA) with the sister of the stepson’s mother Margaret Daley. He placed his daughter Mary Ellen McKamie with a couple named Samuel and Jane Frazier that could not have children, and placed young James McKamie with a nearby family. Joseph Eleven McKamie later went to live with his sister Mary Ellen McKamie and her ‘new’ family. James was about 16 at the time his father Marion Wood McKamie was now working in California. James McKamie was unhappy and felt mistreated where he was. Marion Wood McKamie sent him some money from CA to ‘divide with Joseph Eleven McKamie and his sister Mary Ellen McKamie. But young teen James McKamie took the money and ran away. They searched for James McKamie for 2-3 yrs and did not find him, but then James sent a letter to Mary Ellen from Oklahoma. Marion Wood McKamie the father of all the children--finally came back to Missouri and took James and Joseph Eleven McKamie back with him to California. That’s the story of how Joseph Eleven McKamie met Louise Ivina Peters!
They had:
Leora Jane McKAMIE b.1 Sept 1928 Kern Co CAm. __BLEVINS
Joseph Eleven McKAMIE JR b. 2 Nov 1930 Kern Co CA m. in Nevada on 15 Aug 2001 Betty June WORRELL (He also shortened middle name to Leven)
