AUBURN - Mabel A. McKay, 99, of Auburn, formerly of Pawnee, died Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Auburn Nursing and Rehab.
She was born June 29, 1911 in Princeton, the daughter of Gustaf and Emma Johnson. Mabel married John L. McKay on June 7, 1942 and he preceded her in death on January 18, 2000. She is also preceded in death by her brother Clarence Johnson of Princeton.
Mabel was a graduate of Illinois State University, Normal. Mrs. McKay started her teaching career in a one room country school house near Princeton. She taught in Bureau County rural schools and Charleston rural schools which were affiliated with Eastern Illinois University. Later, Mabel and her husband moved to Rockford where she taught at elementary and special education schools for many years.
There are no surviving relatives. She was a life long friend of Pearl Mandel and surviving her are Pearl's daughter, Rita Nelson and her family.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 26, 2011 from 1 p.m. till time of service at 2 p.m. at Bramley Funeral Home, Divernon with Rev. Richard R. Harre officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
