William's father, Gavin (also written as "Guian") McKee, according to his own statement in his pension, was born on 5 May, either 1750 or 1751 (the latter would likely be more correct, according to statements in his pension). Although a county history says he was born in the "Highlands of Scotland," this is highly unlikely, as other family traditions point to the more probable origin of Ireland (but ultimately lowland Scotland), and, as he was named in the will of James Moore of Middleton, Cumberland Co., PA, in 1767, he may actually have been born in Pennsylvania. His wife was Abigail, whose name, according to a descendant, Jennie Long, of El Dorado, Kansas, was Lane, but this has not been proved.
Hester was born in 1785, not 1786, according to Bible records. According to an obituary in the Western Christian Advocate, a Methodist newspaper, her parents were Elijah and Hester (Blair) Adams. They were probably married in Bedford Co., PA. The Adams family is a difficult one to figure out.
William McKee was born in what became St. Clair Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
