JOHN BURNETT was born March 26, l852, in Washington County, Iowa.Departed this life September l, l925, at his home in Lamoni.He was 73 years, 5 months and 5 days old at the time of his passing.He had been in failing health for some time, but was stricken with paralytic stroke about two weeks ago and following this pneumonia set in which was the immediate cause of his death.
He moved with his father to Decatur County in l853, locating near where Decatur City now stands.Most of his life was spent in this county.
He was married to SUSANNAH MCKEE, January 2l, l873.To this union were born twins, a boy and a girl.The boy died in infancy and the daughter at the age of 26 years.After the death of their daughter, he and his wife desiring to be helpful, took the children of a brother who suffered the loss of his companion and reared them to manhood and womanhood.For the past seven years, MR. BURNETT had made his home with his niece, MRS. ELLA MCKEE, who cared for him as a father.
He was the third child of a family of eight.Settling in this county in its early history, he passed through the incidents connected with frontier life.He was a man of industry and integrity and by honest toil acquired a competency that insured him against want in his closing scenes of life.
There were present at the funeral of his father's family the following: W.A. BURNETT, of Oberlin, Kan.; MRS. ELLEN BENNETT, of Buhl, Idaho; R.D. BURNETT, of Kansas City, Mo.; FRANKLIN BURNETT, of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and MRS. JOHN LIGHTHILL, of Kellerton, Iowa.One sister, MRS. VIRA HEATHMAN, of Buhl, Idaho, could not be present.These with many other relatives and friends mourn the loss of a true and devoted friend.
The funeral was held from the Latter Day Saints Church.Prayer by Elder David Dowker, the sermon by Elder L.G. Holloway.Burial in beautiful Rose Hill.
