Dr. McKenna Succumbs Widely Known Physician Dies in Private hospital in Manhattan Death unexpected Although he had been under treatment for some time Memeber of St John's Visiting Staff
Dr. Henry J. McKenna, a member of the visiting staff of St. John's Hospital and one of the best known physicians of Long Island City, died at 7 o'clock this Tuesday morning in a private hospital in Manhattan. He entered the hospital last Saturday. Although aware of the gravity of his condition, due to an ailment of several years' duration, Dr. McKenna said nothing about it, not even to his wife, who is In Atlantic City with their young son. He was under treatment by Dr. Burns of Long Island City. Saturday morning Dr. McKenna was with several friends, but he said nothing about entering the hospital. His wife and child could not be summoned to his bedside before he died. Dr. McKenna was born on Greenpoint avenue, Greenpoint, about thirty seven years ago. His father, the late Henry McKenna, was a hay and feed merchant. Dr. McKenna's mother Mrs. Helen McKenna, now resides in Blissvllle. He also leaves a brother, James McKenna, an attache of the Queens County Court, and a sister,Mrs. Thomas F. Bergen, of 149 Pearsail street, Blissvllle. Dr. McKenna received his early education in the schools of Long Island City and after graduation from high school entered Keltevue Medical School in Manhattan, from which he was graduated with high honors In 1901. After serving as an Interne In St. John's Hospital, Dr. McKenna began practice In Long Island City with offices on Fifth street, opposite St Mary's Church. Two years ago he moved from there to 134 Third avenue, Astoria. Dr. McKenna had a high reputation as a surgeon and his practice was unusually large. His widow was Miss Louise Pofcano (???) of Long Island City. She was married to Dr. McKenna shortly after her graduation from Barnard College. Dr. McKenna was a member of Queens Borough Lodge of Elks, and a Knight of ColumbusFuneral arrangements have been deferred until the arrival of Mrs. Mckenna.
