I'm descended from Gideon McKimmey of Guilford Co, NC.Here's his bio.I'm interested in corresponding with anyone connected to this line:
Gideon McKimmey, Sr. and his wife Charity -- lived in Caroline County, Maryland and Guilford County, North Carolina. They were married in the 1780s.He died between Aug 10, 1809 (date of will) and the 1810 census.
The assessment rolls of 1783 of Caroline County, Maryland (formed from parts of Dorcester County and Queen Ann's County, Maryland) show Gideon McKimmey as the owner of the land known as Maiden's Folly previously owned by his father. The rolls also show Gideon as the owner of Harvey's Priveledge.
In the 1790 census for Maryland, Caroline County, the Gideon McKimme family consisted of one male 16 or older and three females (Gideon, Charity, Mary and Elizabeth.)
In August 1796, Gideon McKimmey sold to Thomas Bayard a parcel of land including three acres of Adam's Neglect, several acres of Harvey's Priveledge, and 93½ acres,37 perches of a parcel of land called London. The description of Maiden's Folly of London when purchased by William McKimmey showed that it contained about 100 acres, indicating that Gideon sold about what his father had purchased.
According to Joseph Nichols and the Nicholites, a book about the Quakers of Maryland, Delaware, and North and South Carolina, many of the McKimmeys of Dorchester and Caroline Counties, Maryland were Nicholites. Many of the Nicholites went to Guilford County, North Carolina, where they joined other Quakers.
Gideon wrote his will on Aug 10, 1809 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He is referred to in his will as Gideon McKemma. To his daughters Mary Bishop and Elizabeth Hardin, he left 5 shillings each.To his son William he left 85 acres, son Shadrack was left 30 acres, and son James received 30 acres. To his wife Charity he left:
"all horses, cows, sheep, hogs, utensils, household furniture for farming and living on the place during her widowhood and at her decease or marriage what property that remains to be at her disposal and in case she is with child, I do bequeath it 30 dollars . . . to be raised among all other 3 boys according td their holdings of land to be paid to it when it comes of age."
Witnesses were James Fraizer and John McKaise (?). Gideon signed with his mark.
In the 1810 census for North Carolina, Guilford County, (Roll 40, page 172), the Charity McKinney family consisted of three males under 10 (Shadrack, James, and baby Gideon), one male 10 and under 16 (William), two females under 10, one female 10 and under 16, one female 16 and under 26, and one female 45 and older (Charity).
