Rhea; thank you very much for that information, it is extremely helpful. You have helped to solve another McKinley mystery for me. First, I was curious about William and Nancy Moore McKinley because, and you may have this information, John McKinley's will of 1819 mentions a William McKinley but his relationship is not stated. And I was curious if the William that married Nancy Moore was the same mentioned in John's will. I have copies of letters from the Rev. War files of John Hunter, if interested let me know and I can send copies. These are personal family letters and affidavits concerning Martha's pension. One of the letters is from the above mentioned William McKinley in which he addresses John and Martha Hunter as uncle and aunt. He also mentions Uncle James McKinley and Oliver McKinley. What you did help me with was my link to John and Grizzle (Bratton) McKinley of Bedford Co. I was aware of John and Grizzle, but did not know her maiden name. For me this whole scenario is really complicated, my gr-gr-grandfather, William Harrison McKinley, b. in 1822 in Ohio, had a family bible record in which he names his mother, Grizle Bretan McKinley who was b. in 1792 and was baptized by the Rev. D. Biard (first Presb. Minister of Bedford Co., PA). I believe that William's mother was born Grizle Bretan McKinley (probably named after her maternal granddmother, Grizzle Bratton McKinley b. 1732)who also married a McKinley. And that this Grizzle Bretan (McKinley) McKinley was a daughter of Oliver and Elizabeth (McKinley) McKinley. What makes this complicated is that I have two generations of McKinleys marrying McKinleys. I do have ancestors of families intermarrying but I have not found it in two consequtive generations. But I don't know how closely related these two generations of McKinleys were. You are related to Martha McKinley, dau. of John and Grizzle, who married John Hunter. I believe I am related to Martha's sister, Elizabeth who married Oliver McKinley. In their father's will he mentions dau. Martha Hunter and her Hunter children, and he mentions dau. Elizabeth McKinley and her McKinley children. Martha and Elizabeth also had a brother James McKinley and in James McKinley's will he mentions cousins John Hunter and Oliver McKinley. And John Hunter and Oliver McKinley are mentioned in early Mason Co., KY land records relating to land belonging to James McKinley. Other records I found mention that Martha (McKinley) Hunter was a sister of James McKinley one of the early pioneers of Mason o., KY. Back to John McKinley's will of 1819. He mentions Elizabeth's children, all daughters, one named Grizzle McKinley, and records show that Elizabeth's daughters were born around 1788 and upwards, about the same time as my Grizzle. In 1814 Oliver McKinley sells his land in KY and moves across the river to Washington, Clermont Co., OH. This is where my William Harrison McKinley was born. I believe my William's father was named John McKinley, but I think he may have died before 1830, as did Oliver McKinley. In the 1830 census for Washington there is listed an Elizabeth McKinley, head of household, and the ages and genders of all in her household match with information that I have on my William and his mother, Grizzle, and his siblings. Up to now this was my only real tie to John and Grizzle of Bedford Co., PA. Sorry for rambling on trying to explain myself. I hope that I didn't make it sound too complicated. Also interesting is that John's father was named Patrick. do you have any other information on this family? And do you have anything on the family of Grizzle Bratton b. 1732? Thank you again. It was a great help.
