I am looking for information on William, whose last name had the above variations. He was born about 1673 in Scotland. He died in Frederick County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Blair abt. 1720, supposedly in Scotland, although it is said she came from Wales. Their children (John, Richard, William, Margaret, Agnes, Jane) were all born in Ireland. I'm descended from Margaret, who married James Bruce, from Leochel-Cushnie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, in 1744 in Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia.
This is the information I have found on William so far:
William McMachen appears on a list of the first settlers of Old Frederick County, Virginia ", identified from a Fee Book maintained by the
first clerk of court, Col. James Wood (died in 1759). The list of settlers
is given below along with the fees assessed in pounds of tobacco, the medium
of exchange. The date of assessment was 1744, which was one year after the
courthouse in Winchester was established.
One version of the Fee Book was published in 1926 by Katherine Glass Greene
in her book, Winchester, Virginia and its Beginnings, 1743-1814. An expanded
version of fee-paying settlers named in 1744 is found in Handley Library,
Archives Division, in Winchester. Both versions are the handwriting of Wood,
but the different lists were apparently made at different times during the
year. I have taken the liberty to combine the two lists for 1744.

Elizabeth McMahon appeared in court May 26, 1788 in Yohogania County, Virginia, court held on Andrew Heath farm. Her son, Richard, appeared in court on the same day, also. Andrew Heath was her grandson. William and his family probably came to America between 1733 and 1737. He was a Justice in Orange County, and also in Old Frederick County after it was split off from Orange County.
