Please say hello to Paula. I would like to get her current e-mail address. The one she gave me some years ago does not work. When I last tried to get in touch with her, I was unsuccessful. The last I heard was that she was in the College Station/Bryan area, but I do not know if that is still the case.
As to family history--it is my understanding that Galveston and Indianola in Texas were also ports of entry as was New Orleans in Louisiana. The story I always heard from my mother, Mary Ann McMurrough Klein, daughter of Patrick Joseph McMurrough born to James McMurrough and Margaret Henry(Hendry)in County Armagh, was that her grandfather and grandmother and their children came by ship to Galveston and traveled from Galveston by ox cart to the land they would settle on in Grimes County, TX.
When I was in Ireland, I was told that most McMurroughs hail from Wexford but I was told that when I was in Armagh. I did not travel to Wexford. When I visited Armagh, the people at the Irish History Museum said that McMurrough was not a name from that region. They were surprised when I showed them the baptismal record of my grandfather, Patrick Joseph McMurrough. They were familiar with the name, Muldoon, as that name is associated withCounty Armagh. Muldoons were the baptismal sponsors of some of the McMurrough children who were born in Armagh. The record that I found on James McMurrough was that he was a shopkeeper in Ireland before coming to the US.
I always thought that the reason records were not available on the Galveston stage of the McMurrough history was that the great Galveston storm destroyed so much of the city. I just thought that the records that might have been available to us were destroyed. Perhaps that is not the case.
I would like to share whatever history and records we all have found in order to learn more about our family. I have always been intrigued by the family story that a brother of James McMurrough set out for Australia when James set our for the USA. We were told that the brothers never were in contact again. I have always wondered if that brother made it to Australia or stopped somewhere along the way. I do not know the name of that brother. Another family story is that a brother of James owned ships. I do not know how many ships or if the brother who went to Australia was the same brother.
When will there be a McMurrough family reunion? I never seem to be in Texas when they take place.
