John K. Adams 6/29/01
From a genealogy report written between 1913 & 1921 by Louise Threete Collier Hodges (Frances Harper McMullan, Sinclair McMullan, Jr., Patrick, John Sr.) come the following paragraphs:
John McMullan, progenitor of the McMullan family in Virginia, Georgia, Alabama and other states, was born in Dublin, Ireland of Scotch-Irish parentage in 1740.In 1760 he came to Virginia and located in Orange County, Swift Run Gap in the Blue Ridge mountains. His home was called Mt. Pleasant.
About 1767 he married in Va., Theodosia Beasley, supposed to have been the daughter of Robert Beasley who came to America from Ireland about 1750 and located in Lunenburg Co., Va.By this his first marriage, he had five children:James, Patrick, Mary, Katherine and John.James married Edith Kendall (or Kenderly) an English woman, and had six sons and one daughter:John, James, Neal, William, Henry, Jeremiah and Elizabeth.John, James, Neal and Elizabeth remained in Virginia near the old home place.Henry and William went to Indiana. William married Ann Cave...
(later in the report...)
John, son of John, Sr. and his first wife, married first Jane Dooley. He was three times married. Each of his wives was named Jane.
Interestingly, the next paragraph reads:
After the death of his first wife, John McMullan, Sr. married, about 1786, Elizabeth Stowers of Orange Co., Va.By this marriage he had ten children:Neal, Jeremiah, Louis, Thomas, Fielding, Nancy, Sinclair, Elizabeth, Daniel and Lavinia.
Hmmmmm...
