Benedict was born 23 Aug 1862, to Isaac and Caroline (Pierrepont) McNair. Isaac, a native of Pennsylvania, took his family to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1868, and was a pioneer business man in that city. He died in 1903.
Benedict attended public schools in Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota. Worked as a clerk in a wholesale hardware store in Minneapolis for six years, then located to Colwich, KS, to open the State Bank of Colwich, in Sedgwick County, and managed the bank for six years. Then located to New York for one year. In 1893, he moved to Great Falls, Montana, and engaged in the real estate, loan, and insurance business. Was County Commissioner of Cascade County, 1897-1901.
On 12 Aug 1896, Benedict married Miss Marion Grace Sprague, born in Spragueville, NY, daughter of Chester & Laura (McGill) Sprague, natives of NY. McNair children: Chester Sprague; Sarah Pierrepont; Benedict P. Jr.
Benedict P. McNair died 12 Dec 1923, Age 61, Great Falls, MT. Son, Benedict P. McNair, Jr., died 30 Nov 1963, Orange, CA Chester S. McNair, died 19 Jul 1967, age 68, Great Falls, MT
