Your McNew line is related to mine. I am very interested in hearing anything about Cherokee-McNew connections. My husband's grandfather told us his mother was Cherokee. Her name was Mary Elizabeth Johnson. Her mother was Mary McNew (daughter of who married (1) Benjamin Johnson and (2) Alexander Scott in Washington County, VA.Mary Elizabeth seems to have been born sometime between the death of Benjamin Johnson and her mother's marriage to Alexander Scott. There is no indication that either of these men were Cherokee.
We have found no record of Mary Elizabeth Johnson's birth. We haven't been able to find her, her mother, or her siblings on the 1860 or 1870 Census.I know many Johnsons from Virginia settled in the Johnson City area, but I haven't been able to find her there, either. The family shows up back in Washington County on the 1880 Census, shortly after Alexander Scott's death.Mary Elizabeth Johnson married my husband's great grandfather, Samuel Henderson (whose mother was also named Mary McNew!)
Stephen Cawood and Emily McNew were never married. That is why their children have the last name McNew. He was married to Emily's cousin, Nancy McNew.
