I guess the suspects have to be the families of the brothers Peter, Elijah and Silvanus McNitt.I believe all three were in the Walnut area during this period, although I lack conclusive evidence of Silvanus in the area before 1850.
I would not be surprised if the child's name "Caleb" had been inspired by Caleb Rice (1788-1848), another early burial in the Walnut Cemetery.Caleb Rice was the uncle of Peter McNitt's wife Deborah "Dolly" Rice McNitt. On the other hand, Caleb's daughter Euretta was married to John S. Montgomery, brother of Elijah McNitt's wife Francina.Elijah was active in handling Caleb Rice's estate matters when he died in July 1848, and one of Caleb Rice's sons lived with the Elijah McNitt family after the death of his parents.
Caleb McNitt's dates would seem to fit the birth order of either Peter's or Elijah's families.I have only two children born to Peter and Dolly with dates in 1842 and 1844.On the other hand, Elijah and Francina were married in January 1845, and the first birth I have for them is Deborah in March 1848.
For me, the evidence which tilts the decision toward Elijah and Francina is the fact that I have detailed records of eleven of her children, but her obituary says she had twelve children, including a son who died in infancy.I had no other idea who that son could be and now assume it is this Caleb McNitt.
