I just sent you an e-mail, but I decided to go ahead with this as well in case others wanted to read it. Mary McQuaig born in Ware Co., Ga. 12/16/1851, was the oldest child of James (Jimpsey) Neil McQuaig and Caroline Miller. Caroline, of course, is the daughter of David Jesse Miller and Loanza Dyess. Susannah was another of their dauthers. Mary married Harmon Finch Jeffords 9/3/1868. He was born in Ware Co., Ga, on July 4, 1849, the son of Harmon V. Jeffords and Eurydice Jones.
Harmon was a farmer and Mary was a homemaker in Ware Co., and probably lived near Waresboro, where they were both Congregational Methodists. They both are burried in Kettle Creek Cemetary in Waresboro. She died 7/28/1932 and he died3/3/1915.
They had nine Children, Thomas, Martin, Charles, Susan, Harmon Mack, Margaret, Mary Laura Bell, David, and Josie.
Mary Laura Bell was born 1/26/1883 in Ware Co. and died 7/10/1919.My records say she married Joseph Randall Taylor and that there is a seperate file on her, but I don't think I have it. Besides, I'm sure you already know that info.
So, going back to Jimpsey Neil McQuaig, he had coal black hair, blue eyes, and a red beard. He was in the Indian Wars in 1838 at the age of 11. He was probably a drummer boy under Cpt. Miller, his future father in-law. He was the 4th of 6 sons all born in Wilkinson Co.GA to Neil McQuaig and Charity Martin. Their life stories during the Civil War reads like a novel. Oldest son William Martin b.1815 married Matilda Taylor, James Martin b.1818 marriedNancy Yarborough, John b.1820 married 1. Ara Beck and 2.Epsey Ann Sanders, JN b.11/27/1827 married 12/23/1851 to Caroline Miller 6/27/1837, Edmund b.1832 never married and Joseph b.1834 married Catherine Miller.
Jimpsey Neil, who was 24 when he wed his 14 year old bride, went to war 10 years later when he and his brother Joseph enlisted on 10/1/1861. Jimpsey as a Private with the Forrest Rangers, Ware County Guard, Company K, 26th Reg. of the Army of Northern Virginia and Joseph as a Sargent in Company B. Their brother Edmund enlisted 5/3/1862with the "Oconee Grays" in the GA Volunteer Army, 57th Reg, Co. K, Army of the Tennessee. William Martin had moved to Florida,John was still in Wilkinson Co. andJames, who had served with the mounted Calvary against the Creeks, was getting to old and had 9 children. Of the 9 only 2 were boys. His oldest chld, son John W. born 1840, was 21 when he enlisted 8/26/1861 .
One week later after Edmund enlisted, Joseph retired with a disablity on 5/10/1862.Edmund died of pneumonia at Vicksburg, MS March 25, 1863.Our fore father Jimpsey Neilfought in many battles with the Gordon Brigade. He was wounded twice during 2nd Manassas (or 2nd Bull Run). It was reported that on August 23, 1863, he suffered both a chest wound and an arm wound. A "minnie ball" had enterd his chest, injuring his lung. Aseperate report listed that he "lost" his arm, but there was never any mention of this in verifyable records or after the war. He was discharged. His nephew, John W. made 3rd Corporal March 31, 1864. One week later, John W. was killed at Wilderness Virginia, May 6, 1864. Jimpsey was back home when he and Joseph recieved word that Sherman's troops had destroyed the home and property of the brother John in Wilkinson Co. They built a ox cart in order to move his family back to Ware Co.They reported that the women had followed the troops through the fields in search of food and supplies that the troops had dropped after the plundering. There is so much more informtion here that it would take amother "work day" to complete it.I hpoe everyone enjoys this. I'll try to add more next week.
