Mary McCurdy was born about 1834 on Rathlin, married John Allan McQuilkin 20th August 1861.
There are only records for six children: John b. 1862, Susan b. 1863, Mary Jane b. 1865, James b. 1867, Patrick Allan b. 1874 and Joseph Allan b. 1878 (by which time Mary's biological clock would be past childbearing).
John Allan is not noted as deceased on Joseph Allan's marriage cert 17th Feb 1900 but Mary is Listed in the 1901 census as a 67 year old Widow, head of house. Joseph Allan and Wife, Essie (Esther McCurdy) were living in the same house with their first child Mary E. So it seems that John Allan may have died in 1900 and his death cert MAY name both parents (though I doubt it).
While doing transcripts of the Hatches matches and dispaches in Greenock and Port Glasgow, Scotland, I almost fell off my seat when I saw: "Mary McQuilkin, formerly of Rathlin Island, died 13th Feb 1911 at the house of her son-in-law, Patrick Kelly, 13 Rue End Street, Greenock".
I was waiting at the Registry the next day!!!
Mary's parents were John McCurdy, a farmer, and Elizabeth McCurdy (Maiden Surname: McCurdy) both deceased. The death was reported by Patrick McQuilkin (Son). She died of cancer of the rectum.
NOW does anyone have anything on John and Elizabeth.
