Fire Lt. James J. McSweeney, a member of the Syracuse Fire Department 20 years, died yesterday after being stricken ill at his home. He resided at 461 Redgewood Dr.
Lt. McSweeney, 43, was a native of Utica and had been a resident of the city for 36 years. His recent assignement with the fire department was with Truck 4.
He was a veteran of World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and a member of its Holy Name Society.
He was the first president of the Firemen's Credit Union.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Barbara Thompson McSweeney; two daughters, Mary Martha and Patricia Ann McSweeney; two sons, James E. and Timothy G. McSweeney; three sisters, Mrs. Clarissa Carpenter of Rochester, Mrs. Rita Connelly and Mrs. Theresa McCarthy; three brothers, John C. of Middletown, Joseph A. of Silver Springs, Md., and Bernard E. McSweeney of Damascus, Md.
Services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Gaynor & Maslyn Funeral Home, and at 9 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church.Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.
