McThompson Origin Probability
I believe that the name McThompson is in all likely hood only one of hundreds of variant names stemming from the Gaelic name of "MacTamhais". "Mac", means "son of" and "Tamhais" means, "Thomas". So with Thompson or Thomson you have "Thomas's son". The "mh" in the middle of MacTamhais is pronounced as a "v". MacTamhais was later slightly more anglicised to the name MacTavish. NOTE: We are not a sept to Clan Campbell as they will dispute. Clan MacThomas I believe have their origins based in Clan MacTavish. I have no doubt that they may dispute that too. Clan MacTavish/Thompson has been without a chief for 200 years since the Battle of Culloden. Many, but not all have changed their surname spelling due to the Highlander Clearances and many had to flee as I believe did mine from the English to Ireland. It was used as a jump point to Canada, America, Australia, New Zealand and other places around the world. Contact the Chief of Clan MacTavish/Thom(p)son at [email protected]
