I have a McToal among my ancestors. I have no evidence that they came from Ireland but since Northern Ireland is the only other place I've come across this name, it seems likely to be where they're from. Catherine McDowall (McToal) died in Glasgow, Scotland in 1858 at the age of 48. I don't know where she was born but her father was Henry McToal. I suspect she changed her name to make it sound more Scottish or else it was mistaken for McDowall due to an Irish accent. Her mother was Sarah Stewart (a name common to both Scotland and NI. Catherine married James McGrogan or Grogans (this one's got to be Irish). I'd appreciate any information you may have about any of these McToals.
