Hi Maccas everywhere! I am a Melbourne, Australia McWhinney, 5th gen Aussie. I believe/understand that the origin of the name McWhinney isGalloway in Scotland, where McKenzie was mispronounced M'whunnie. Gallowglassmen were imported by Irish lairds to Ireland as archers, spearmen and footsoldiers in the 14th century, so that is maybe how we got from West Scotland to the Ulster Province with its Northern Counties. My original Australian forebear was Alexander McWhinney born Killiberry in Co Down Ireland approx 1819 son of Arthur (I have no-one reliably traced before Arthur in my records). Alexander migrated at 18 to Kingston Jamaica and worked for uncle Thomas on sugar pantation. Married Katherine or Kathleen Williams, daughter of a local high court judge who had a brother who was an ordained Anglican minister. Alex and a brother Whiteside McWhinney chartered a ship, the John Robinson and led an expedition of 40 to Australia 1852-3 to Melbourne and died in Hotham (Now Nth Melb). His son Alexander was on ship with Alex snr as a child married locally and his son Albert my grandfathermoved to Sydney with wife Henrietta Louise (nee Johnson but name changed from Johanson - father a Norwegian whaling captain) 3 children and had 5 more. My father Walter Henry McWhinney was youngest b Sydney 1921 died 1963. I moved with my family to Melbourne in 1990, where I discovered much of this info.
