Hello Katherine There was a Henry Osborne Devenish Meares who was a solicitor in Christchurch, New Zealand in the 1890's and also Mayor of St Albans before it amalgamated with Christchurch Council. He was married to Eva May Garrick, daughter of Barrister Francis James Garrick (a N.Z. member of parliament). Eva (known as Mary) died in 1893. They had two children Henry Devenish Meares (Frank) and Bessie. I think that Henry Osborne Devenish Meares returned to Australia and possibly re-married. There is a family tree on the internet for the Devenish-Meares family, originally from Ireland, which may help you to find your branch. A lot of the family dropped the Devenish and kept the Meares. I am related through the Garrick family.
