I noticed your message on the Mearns Gen Forum.I don't think I can cast any positive light on your family, but my interest is in my 3x g grandmother who was Elizabeth Mearns, bap Benholm in 1788.Her father was John Mearns, mother Margaret Robertson. There are, as you probably, know many of the Mearns clan originating from Johnshaven - baptised in Benholm, all connected with the sea and probably all related in some way or another if one goes back a few generations.
You may have a note of the monumental inscriptions in Benholm Churchyard, but if not here are one or two which may interest you:
"1802. by Isobel Mearns, h David Largie shipmaster Johnshaven 30.3.1800 76 (his parents and Largie whitefisher Johnshaven & Elspet Mearns also here int).single masted ship in medallion"
"1816. single masted ship in rope medallion, anchors.by And Mearns shipmaster Montrose imo fa John Mearns shipmaster Johnshaven d 1815 73 . . . . . his wife Marg(aret.......(broken)"
"by David & And Mearns shipmasters in Montrose imo gmo Margt Blues d 7.1.1819 60, gfa David Mearns 27.4.1841 89, bro & sister both d inf.And Mearns d at sea on or about 24.12.1845 34, their mo Jean Mearns 23.7.1850 65.David Mearns shipmaster 20.11.1852 43"
I hope some of the above will be of interest. If you come across any information about my Elizabeth's family I would be pleased to hear it.
