I'm trying to determine the families of Samuel Mears, b.abt. 1797 and George Mears, b.abt. 1806. These two were married to sisters Ann and Catherine Pugh Cleaver, daughters of Isaac Cleaver and Mary Davis.
In the 1840 census, there are 8 Mears households listed in Columbia county, PA - 2 Alexanders, George, Jessey [sic], John, "M. S.", Samuel and William. "Jessey" appears to be the oldest of this group, and George and Samuel match the ones I'm tracking.
I'm guessing that most, if not all, of the Columbia county Mears families are descendants of John Mears, the Quaker preacher, (abt.1737-1819), and Susanna Townsend (abt. 1737-1817, who was an early resident of Catawissa. According to various Mears projects on RootsWeb and Ancestry, John and Susanna Mears did have a son Jesse, who could be a match for the one in the 1840 census, except that he reportedly died in 1839.
If anyone has any information on the Mears families of Columbia county, PA prior to the 1850 census, I'd deeply appreciate it.
