Since we all seem to have come to a dead end on researching the British origins of the Merry family in New England, perhaps this will point us in another direction. See earlier posts for common derivation of the Meers, Mere, Meares and Merry surnames. I found it in the Allen County Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana, which has a genealogy collection second to none (or perhaps, only to the LDS library in Salt Lake City).
The following information is from the undated monograph “Mears, Meers, Mears Family of Boston” by G. Eunice Meers, b. 1880.
Robert Meares (Mere) (Meers)
Born in England 1592 (“aged 43 in 1635"); died in Boston, Mass in summer of 1667; will dated Feb. 20, 1666 and probated in Boston, Mass., September 10, 1667.
Married in England to Elizabeth Johnson, sister of Captain James Johnson of Boston, Mass. She was born in 1605 (“aged 30 in 1635"). She signed a deed July 24, 1672 in Boston but probably died before May 4, 1674 when her son Samuel sold some property he had inherited from his father.
Children of Robert and Elizabeth Meares:
Samuel, born in England, 1632; died soon after arrival in Boston.
John, born in England, March 1635; married Mary (Mercy) Steven, born in Boston; baptized December 10, 1637; died Dec. 31, 1637.
Steven, born in Boston; baptized December 10, 1637; died Dec. 31, 1637.
Samuel, born June 7, 1641; married Mary Stace (Stacy)
James, born March 9, 1644, married Elizabeth Mellows.
James Meares (Meers)
Son of Robert and Elizabeth (Johnson) Meares, was born in Boston, Mass., March 9, 1644 (VR); baptized at First Church, Boston, March 31, 1644 (church records); died in Boston October 6, 1712 (VR), buried in Boston Oct. 8, 1712 (Sewell’s Diary); estate administered in Boston Dec. 22, 1741. Married Elizabeth Mellows, who was born at Charlestown, Mass., March 5, 1643 (Jacobus). Her parents were Edward and Hannah (Smith) Mellows of Charlestown, Mass.
Children of James and Elizabeth Meares born in Boston (VR)
James, born Dec. 21, 1666
Elizabeth, born Aug. 1, 1668; she was baptized in the 3rd, or Old South Church, Nov. 18, 1684 and died unmarried, Feb. 17, 1694-5.
Edward, born March 22, 1669, baptized in Old South Church, Nov. 18, 1684
Captain Robert, born Jan. 29, 1671; died in London, England, unmarried. Estate administered in Boston, Dec. 15, 1722.
Oliver, born Dec. 3, 1773; baptized in Old South Church, November 18, 1684.
Hannah, born Jan. 28, 1676; died in infancy.
Hannah, born June 2, 1678, probably died young since she was not baptized with the other children in 1684.
Nathaniel, born Oct. 7, 1682; died in infancy
Nathaniel, born September 26, 1683; baptized in Old South Church, Nov. 18, 1684
John, born May 12, 1680; married first, Ann, and second Sarah Griggs
Mary, baptized Nov. 29, 1686; married Capt. John Bulkley
Stephe, born May 15, 1690.
(James Meares was a feltmaker and hatter, and in later years an innholder in Boston. Sometimes spells his name Meers, as records show.)

(This is background information for my query)
Hi, I'm a bit late in inquiring about this family but I've just begun to explore the relationship between Elizabeth Jo(h)nson Meares and James Jo(h)nson and my ancestor, Anne Motley/Matlet Douglas, wife of William Douglas of Ringstead and New London CT. Both Elizabeth and James attested that Anne was the daughter of Thomas Motley and brother to Robert Matlat in her claim on the estate of her brother Robert, her last surviving sibling. This attestation was dated May 20 1670 Boston. Ann traveled from New London to make the notarized claim. Elizabeth says she is from Little Broughdon in Northamptonshire. My question to anyone interested is how the Johnson's were connected to Ann and what the name of Elizabeth's home town is.I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who knows anything about this matter.
