The origin of the name Mebane was the Welsh MABAN/MABON. It was base on the Welsh word "MAB". The suffixs "ON","AN",EN" and "IN" were added 1n Wales,Cornwall & Scotland. MABAN was orginaly prounced MAYben. Later in England it was spelled this way and there were families of this surname living in Ireland and England. I was born in Alamance County, N.C. where the brothers Alexander,Sr. and William Jr. settled in mid 1700"s. The Mebanes of Alamance County prounced the name Mebbin and were offended when referred to as MeBane.
